Get active for the Olympics - join PCS

We want the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) to voluntarily agree to recognise the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS). We will be writing to senior management to arrange a meeting.

Recognition – what does it mean for me and why it is important?

Recognition is the term used when trade unions and management agree to negotiate on issues that affect staff, such as pay, hours of work, holidays and other terms and conditions.

Having a recognised trade union gives workers power to achieve improvements in their workplace. An independent trade union, such as PCS, is the effective way of delivering positive change within a workplace.

By joining PCS you can make a difference. The more members we have, the quicker we will be able to achieve recognition.

By joining PCS:

  • You will have the advantages of your workplace reps being backed by an independent national union of over 310,000 members.
  • Your workplace reps will be independently trained and supported to negotiate with your management on an equal footing.
  • You will have opportunities to learn new skills through trade union education and hands on experience.
  • PCS will provide your workplace reps with important information and details of the latest developments in relation to pay and any other issues affecting members within both the public and private sector

Common questions

Why a trade union and what do I get for my money?

By joining PCS you will be deciding to set up a body that has the power to negotiate with senior management on behalf of staff.

PCS is an independent democratic organisation, and you have the opportunity to influence all decision-making. This means, you elect your staff representatives and vote on accepting or rejecting changes to your pay and terms and conditions.

Although we do not affiliate or sponsor any political party we do campaign on the issues that are important to our members.

What else can a recognised trade union mean for me?

Strong union membership helps ensure that employees are treated with dignity and respect.

PCS campaigns for strong and clear policies to prevent bullying, harassment and victimisation of workers.

People who work in areas where there are recognised trade unions have better pay, holidays and safer work places.

How much will it cost?

Whilst PCS are not recognised for bargaining purposes with the employer the cost will be £5.94 a month for full time employees and £2.97 for part time employees.

Once PCS are recognised then it is 0.6% of your annual income. To find out what this would cost you per month multiply your annual salary by 0.6% and divide by 12.

Monthly subscriptions are up to a maximum of £11.60 per month.
