Sustainable Communities Act

The new Sustainable Communities Act came into force in October 2008. It should provide a channel for local people to drive central government assistance and action to improve and protect the economic, social and environmental well being of their area.

The act could potentially be used by citizens, communities and councils to help:

  • Protect local offices and services
  • Increase renewable energy, public transport or local food
  • Change planning rules
  • Change government policy or even force new legislation

Well over 100 local government authorities (LGAs) have now opted in to use the Act. The Local Works steering group which promotes the Act which PCS is proud to be part of, has drawn up a list of key policy proposals. This shows how LGAs can use the Act to promote local services. These are available on the Local Works website.

For more information about the campaign and to find out whether your council is going to use the Act please visit the Local Works website.
