Massive strikes start month of action

Our action on 8 and 9 March caused widespread disruption as more than 200,000 PCS members went on strike against imposed cuts to redundancy terms.

The two-day strike is over changes to the civil service compensation scheme which will see staff robbed of up to a third of their entitlements and lead to loyal civil and public servants losing tens of thousands of pounds if they are forced out of a job.

Snapshots of the strike

  • Crown and county court sittings cancelled across England and Wales.
  • Jobcentres offering little or no service to the public.
  • Solid support among Met Police civilian staff working, including 999 operators, community support officers and picket lines at Houses of Parliament for the first time in a generation.
  • An estimated 4,000 driving tests cancelled.
  • Problems calling tax and benefit call centres with some switching to recorded announcements.
  • Glasgow passport office closed, appointments cancelled in London and 80,000 passports delayed.
  • Severe disruption at Gatwick as 70% of UK Border Agency staff take part in strike, and delays at other ports of entry.

The government wants to make it easier for whoever wins the general election to cut jobs on the cheap.

To help maintain maximum pressure on the government in the run-up to the election, our national executive has agreed to a national overtime ban until 6 April.

Please support the action – defend jobs and public services
