HMRC plans to close over 200 offices and 25,000 jobs by 2011.
Ever since HMRC made its announcement in 2006 the Department has been keen to reassure the public and politicians alike that there would be no reduction in face-to-face service.
However, despite these assurances HMRC now plan to significantly reduce the number of days the public can have face-to-face access to tax services.
Revenue enquiry centres are currently open Monday to Friday but under these plans customers will only have access to them as little as one or two days a week.
Some of the most vulnerable people in local communities will be hardest hit as these offices are primarily used by the elderly, tax credit claimants in need of emergency payments and migrant workers.

We believe it is economically unsound to continue to make job cuts when a member of HMRC staff brings in an average of £600,000 per year in tax revenue.
The office closures are having a disproportionate impact on female staff many of whom have childcare or other caring responsibilities.
Our campaign has already received a lot of support from politicians of all parties but we need to keep up the pressure and alert them to the cuts in face to face services.
