10 things you should know about pay in the civil service
1.Average civil service pay is £22,850 p.a. compared to £24,970 in the private sector.
2.Admin officers are paid 21% less than people doing comparable jobs in the private sector, and executive officers are paid 18% less.
3.35,000 (7%) civil servants earn less than £15,000 p.a.
4.63% of civil servants earn less than £25,000 p.a.
5.80% of civil servants earn less than £30,000 p.a.
6.There are 230 different bargaining units in the Civil Service each with separate pay and terms and conditions.
7.A member in one department can earn up to a third more than a member in another department/agency on the same grade.
8.Govt plans to introduce a maximum pay difference ratio of 20:1 will have very little impact on senior civil service pay. For example, in DWP the lowest pay is £13,110 and the highest paid IT Director is on £249,999. Less than 20 times the lowest.
9.Civil servants experience a double whammy in terms of pay restraint as the pay freeze includes the cost of progression. This means that many members who are not earning the rate for the job will no longer make progress towards that rate.
10. In the rest of the public sector the cost of progression is costed separately to cost of living increases. Even in the private sector where cost of living increases have been frozen, many companies have continued to pay progression payments.
