PCS against racism and fascism

Join our work to stop racism and fascism

PCS has a proud history of campaigning against racism and fascism and it is the union’s agreed policy to oppose racist and fascist organisations in our workplaces and communities.

Successes in 2011

Having campaigned successfully to beat the British National Party (BNP) in the 2010 general election, our work continued in 2011 with real tangible outcomes.

As part of our Make Your Vote Count campaign in 2011, PCS members joined mass anti fascist anti racist leafleting in key areas targetted by the BNP.

The result of this and ongoing work by many organisations with which we work, was the obliteration of the BNP in areas where they had high hopes, such as Stoke-on-Trent. The racist party lost all but 1 of the 268 seats they were contesting in English council elections and they saw their vote collapse in elections for the Welsh Assembly, N Ireland Assembly and Scottish Parliament.

Work in 2012

Of course, the work to fight fascism and racism continues and this year we will again be working hard to campaign and raise awareness of the dangers of the far right and their message of hate.

Our work will go on throughout the year so please return to these pages for news about how you can join in.

For January, please visit our page about Holocaust Memorial Day page and make arrangements to remember those who died in the Holocaust and genocides of Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur.

NEC Statement on Stephen Lawrence case

The national executive committee of the Public and Commercial Services union gives its whole hearted support to the Lawrence family campaign and applauds the verdict in the murder trial of Gary Dobson and David Norris, but notes that at least 3 members of the gang that murdered Stephen Lawrence remain free.

Members of PCS and its predecessor unions have actively supported the Stephen Lawrence family campaign since its inception. The Lawrence family deserve our utmost respect and support for their tireless campaign against racism in our society and its institutions.

The NEC remain painfully aware that there are still significant issues relating to racism in the criminal justice system such as the use of stop and search, use of the DNA database, ID cards, deaths in custody and race hate crimes including the recent murder of Anuj Bidue on 26 December 2011, that need addressing in order to achieve greater equality for all in society.

PCS will continue to support campaigns such as the Stephen Lawrence Campaign and the Justice for Jay Abatan, providing much needed solidarity. The NEC hope the verdict will lead to a renewed focus on combating racism throughout society.
