Tax justice

Tax justice PCS members are playing a leading role in the fight for tax justice. Our message is clear – A properly resourced, fair tax system will support quality public services and go a long way to eradicating poverty.

These pages provide the latest information and resources on our tax justice campaigning.

Background

The tax gap is currently estimated to stand at £120 billion. This is seriously undermining public services and the development of a more equal society, both in the UK and globally. This is due in no small part to swingeing cuts in HM Revenue and Customs. Since 2005 HMRC has shed half its staff and is set to lose over 10,000 more over the next three years.

PCS are campaigning to get the HMRC cuts stopped while a review of their impact is carried out.

PCS are also joining forces with the likes of War on Want and the Tax justice network to campaign against global injustices in the tax system.
The economies of developing countries are being hit hard as essential public services rely on the taxes collected by their governments. It is estimated that £250 billion is being denied to these economies because of corporate tax dodging.
PCS are supporting calls for a Robin Hood Tax and helped push for the European Parliament's vote for a Euro finanancial transaction tax which was passed in March 2011. MPs on the PCS parliamentary group have been signing up to the EDM 1579 calling for the UK government to follow the example.
