Frequently asked questions

Why is PCS campaigning on well-being?

The civil service once had a reputation as being a good place to work, with good and secure terms and conditions. In recent years the trend for privatisation, importing private sector attitudes and devolving responsibility for personnel management has resulted in these terms and conditions being varied and undermined.

The Gershon efficiency agenda and the Lyons relocation plan have caused further attacks on working conditions and contractual rights.

The well-being at work campaign complements the other strands of the national campaign by seeking to protect, retain and extend good conditions of service for workers whether they work in the public or commercial sector.

What are PCS demands?

The NEC develops PCS demands from the annual delegate conference and group policies and recommendations from the personnel policy forum.

The negotiators’ guidance contains PCS demands for each of the well-being strands.
