Green learning at work day

PCS is committed to being a greener union and members are often curious about green issues and how they are affected by and can benefit from them.

If you are thinking of running a Learning at Work day event this year why not include some green activities in your plans for the day. Below are a few suggestions that might stimulate some interest and discussion.

Ideas for learning at work day events around the environment and sustainability

  • Encourage colleagues to bring in unwanted clothes, cd’s, dvd’s & books to swap, which not only saves items ending up in landfill but cash as well.
  • Arrange for colleagues to learn a new skill such as knitting or sewing so they can make their own clothing and mend items rather than binning them.
  • Organise an organic wine tasting session with Vintage Roots
  • Consider inviting along a speaker from the Soil Association who can talk about the benefits of organic gardening and where possible growing your own.
  • Organise a vegan or vegetarian cookery demonstration if possible or ask vegan or vegetarian colleagues to prepare dishes for others to try.
  • Try organising a climate change quiz over some fair-trade nibbles or show a short film raising awareness over a particular issue. Friends of the EarthGreenpeace and Oxfam all produce short films which could generate discussion & debate. Both Friends of the earth and Greenpeace have local action groups who might be prepared to come along and speak to colleagues about the environmental issues in local areas.
  • Invite a speaker from the Campaign for Better Transport to encourage employees to consider greener methods of transport – the employer may also benefit so should be included where possible.
  • See if there are any green gyms in the local area and if so, invite somebody along to explain how they work. For more information visit BTCV

If you have someone at your learning event who is interested in green issues they can find out more about what PCS is doing at PCS Green. Why not even ask them if they would like to become a green rep for your branch?"
