Mr Pickles gave, as one of his reasons for closing the Audit Commission (and axing 2,000 posts), was senior managers “champagne life style”. Shedding 2,000 public servants to curb the life style of just a few senior managers doesn’t make sense (he could have tackled those managers direct) but it does show the intellectual level of current policy making. So the lesson to senior managers is clear: a “champagne life style” is out but having a Jag is okay.
Meanwhile the head of the Audit Commission has issued a reply to Mr Pickles.
