This fact is revealed in the department’s resource accounts in a table on page 15.
As far as we know Barbara joined the civil service in 2005 (source a Westminster press release, see below).
So as an experiment we entered her estimated service and salary (at least £195K) into DfT (C)’s voluntary redundancy calculator.
If she were under 50 then she would be eligible for a lump sum worth nearly £37K.
According to the table on page 15 she was entitled to a pension of between £15 to £20K. Assuming £20K, and that she was a member of the classic scheme, then Barbara would have got (if she had been treated the same as us) a lump sum of £60K.
Of course these figures are well short of the actual severance payment of £379,372.
Barbara left the Civil Service on 8 May 2009. On 17 November that year she joined Westminster Council as head of finance.
