Double ring

12 February 2010

DSA's newsletter tells staff that "we're nearly there" in getting a group incentive bonus this year (flat rated bonus paid to all staff if the agency hits certain targets).

All the targets are being hit but senior managers have worries that the sick absence target may be missed in the end. As a result some managers have been instructed to phone staff at home in the afternoon, even if they had phoned in that morning to say they are unfit for work.

These phone calls are not part of the sickness absence policy; they are unwarranted and an intrusion.

The Union’s advice to members in DSA is to tell whoever you call in the morning (if you are off sick) that you are trying to recover and get back to work. The last thing you want is someone ringing you up to see if you have had a miraculous recovery during the day.

The Union is raising this issue with senior managers. In our view the phone call is harassment and members may well be entitled to put in a grievance if this practice continues.
