Defend Sam Buckley - Defend the Union

13 September 2010

Sam Buckley the Branch Secretary of CSA Hastings was dismissed on Friday 9th July on grounds of inefficiency following a period of capability action.

The DWP Group Executive is providing support to Sam and other branch officers and members on a continuing basis. This includes calling for support for the campaign against victimisation and the demonstration called in support of Sam.

March & Rally

There will be a march and rally on Saturday 18th September backed by PCS and Hastings and District Trades Council which will assemble at 1pm at Hastings Pier before moving off at 1.30 pm and marching to the town centre for a rally with speakers.

The DWP Group Executive call on all branches, especially those in London and the South East to get as many members as possible to attend.

GEC Authorise Funding

To enable branches to support the demonstration the Group Executive has authorised Branches/Regions to use funds to pay for transport only. Subsistence will not be paid. Where funds are not available Branches can approach the Group for consideration of additional funding. Branches in London/S East should contact the London/S East PCS office on SRC@PCS.ORG.UK.

Unity is Strength

Sam Buckley’s dismissal must be seen in the context of what has happened to other Branch Officers and BEC members in Hastings CSA.

Sam is the fifth Branch Officer in a little over two years to face dismissal in circumstances which PCS believes to be related to their trade union role. Similarly, fifteen members of the Branch Committee have faced disciplinary or other action in the last three years.

It is plain to PCS that their treatment was directly related to holding elected office.

This is an appalling record of attacks on the union with no comparison elsewhere in PCS in the Civil Service, public or commercial sector.

These attacks cannot go unchallenged and members across PCS must stand united in defence of their rights and their representative
