Members will be aware that the coalition government has embarked upon the biggest overhaul of the welfare state since the Fowler Reviews in the 1980's and arguably since the Beveridge report in the 1940's. The main aim of the coalition government is to save £18 billion from the welfare budget by cutting the benefits paid to the poorest and most needy in society. Circular DWP/BB/029/11 reported that the Accessibility Improvement Programme was ending in March 2011. The team then became part of the Accessibility Service and continued to work on improvements to IT for disabled users following the results of two surveys carried out earlier this year. This work has now ended and Accessibility Services will in future be focussing on ensuring that contracts are compliant with the relevant accessibility legislation and DWP practices and policies.
