Guidance for ULRs in DWP

A resource for use before, during and after attendance at the ULR training course

This pack is aimed at PCS union members in the DWP who are interested in finding out more about the union and considering becoming a ULR and also PCS branch officials with responsibility for workplace learning. It is intended that by working through this pack a potential ULR will be able to:

  • Understand why we need PCS union reps and ULRs
  • Understand what PCS union reps do
  • Understand where PCS ULRs can get help and support
  • Decide if you want to get involved

A branch official will be able to:

  • Understand the role of the branch ULR
  • Integrate their ULRs into the branch
  • Explain the role to potential ULRs
  • Give support and representation to ULRs in the branch

Confidentiality

As a ULR it is important that you maintain confidentiality. Members will confide in you about their learning needs and may wish to keep these needs quiet. It is important that members feel that they can trust their PCS rep and that if they confide in you they are confident that this information will not be passed on. If necessary, you can discuss an issue (in confidence) with other BEC reps (for example if you need to seek advice). PCS prides itself on having the trust of its members.
