The following guidance may help in getting sign language interpreters or other support services for disabled members.
A good source of such support is through any local provision for deaf people (or other disabilities). A local deaf services organisation will often have access to interpreters for short meetings etc.
If this fails, there is an internet based organisation, the Royal Association for Deaf People, where interpreter services are listed.
Another option, though more expensive, is a 'short-notice' booking agency, such as Just Communication.
The equality department does have access to the Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People (CACDP) online directory.
We can search for details of the services being sought and can pass contact phone numbers, names etc. on to those making the request.
Please note that the equality department does not have a budget to pay for any such services.
If there is a work-related aspect (meeting between rep and member for disciplinary hearing or other such cases), the employer should be approached to fund the adjustment.
Otherwise, it is to come from branch funds. If such funds do not exist, branch treasurers should contact their group treasurer or speak to our finance department.
