PCS to meet minister over juxtaposed dispute

The PCS is to meet Borders and Immigration minister Phil Woolas on December 9th to discuss the dispute over allowances at the juxtaposed controls in northern France.

PCS raised this issue with David Normington and Lin Homer at the Departmental Whitley Council on November 25th. They offered further discussions in an attempt to find a solution to the dispute and PCS agreed that this was a constructive suggestion. We will be writing to the Department to seek an early meeting. However we believe that, unfortunately, the Department will only negotiate seriously if they face the threat of industrial action.

The meeting with the minister will involve the PCS Parliamentary Group, led by John McDonnell MP, PCS full time officers and myself. We feel we have a very strong case to put to Phil Woolas and we hope to be able to explore ways in which the current dispute can be resolved.

PCS membership continues to grow

Hundreds of members have joined PCS since the current dispute began and membership continues to grow as the union continues to robustly defend its members against the Department’s plans to cut subsistence payments.

Bigger challenges will confront us shortly in the shape of sustainability and annualised hours working. Staff in UKBF will need a union which is prepared to fight hard to get them the best deal in tough negotiations and a union that is prepared to take action if necessary. The PCS is that union.
