From the article written regarding the Land Registry's announcement in respect of the closure of various offices and job losses arising therefrom it would appear to indicate no confidence in the policies of the Government. Is the housing market in such an unhealthy state so as to justify these measures? I was under the impression the Land Registry for years had been a self financing department, unlike most civil service departments. I also wonder at the wisdom of these measures particularly when not so long ago, in mid 1980s to mid 1990s the Land Registry was in a particularly bad position, having many thousands of applications as a back log. I'm sure the Law Society must be able to recall those unfortunate times, again as a result of poor Senior Management decisions in the Land Registry. Are you prepared to sit back and do nothing knowing what occurred in the 1980s and 1990s ?

Messages of support

Dear PCS members,

Land Registry announcement - 22 October

We condemn today’s announcement by the Land Registry that it plans to close offices, cut 1,400 jobs and move towards privatising the work of people in Facilities, IT Support and Regional File Stores.

It is an outrage that hardworking public servants are being subjected to these cuts. The employer should be well aware that the high quality services our members currently provide will suffer as they continue to cut the agency to the bone. They also need to realise that putting people out of work in these times of economic uncertainty will only prolong the recession.
Members in the Land Registry can be assured that the full resources of the national union will be at their disposal in fighting these attacks.

We are already letting our anger be known through the media at both national and local level. We will also be getting the full support of the MP’s in our parliamentary group who have agreed to table a motion criticising the cuts and will be holding an urgent meeting with the Minister.

At times like these it is vital that all members act together in solidarity. Together we are stronger.

Yours sincerely,

Mark Serwotka
General Secretary

President

Please find the following message of support from John McDonnell MP the Chair of the PCS parliamentary group.

"This is another disgraceful attack on public service workers in a misjudged attempt to pay for the bank bailouts. These cuts and privatisations will be opposed politically and industrially.

"At a time when 30% of land in England and Wales remains unregistered, there is no shortage of work to be done in the Land Registry and the Government should be paying tribute to the hard work and dedication of this valuable group of workers.
"The Group has secured an urgent meeting with the Minister on 2nd November to express our opposition and dismay at these proposals."

Michael & Colleagues

First of all, greetings from over Hadrian’s Wall.

I was enjoying a family break in the beautiful Lake Districts of Cumbria last week when I seen this unbelievable announcement coming over the ‘breaking news’ banner on TV, it left me sickened but I couldn’t begin to imagine how you guys felt so I wont come out with any rubbish about knowing how you’re feeling.

You have the full support of our Branch in any decision you take to oppose this disgusting attack on yours and your members’ livelihoods and what is a great public service of Land Registry. If there is anything we can do to help in any way, shape or form, please do not hesitate to ask. We would be only too glad to help.
Yours in comradeship.
