MoJ staff have received the year 2 increase of the Deal in their pay packets on 31 August and the reality of below inflation increases is biting. Those on the band maxima and target maxima will have received a 2% pay increase, or less.
For the largest group of staff in the MoJ, Admin Officers (band E) in the National+ pay range, paid £17,500 in 2007/8 the increase on the band maximum amounts to a paltry £6.90 a week.
For Executive Officers (Band D) on the National+ target maxima, paid £20,304 in 2007/8) who are effective performers, the increase is even less, at £5.80 per week.
With retail price inflation rising at around 5% over the year, in “real terms” (taking into account the cost of living):
All civil servants and public sector workers are facing pay offers below inflation as a result of Government pay policy. We have no choice but to fight this policy as part of a major PCS led campaign. The campaign will include public sector PCS members and other public sector unions where possible. PCS intends to fight government policy and will ballot all PCS civil service members (including those in the MoJ) for strike action in the autumn, if the Government does not change tack.
If we win and change Government pay policy then all Government departments, including the MoJ will benefit from those changes to pay.
