RAF plans huge cuts in planes and bases

Our union has been contacted by a number of members concerned about a story in the Sunday Times of 15 November 2009 and local media about MoD plans to cut 10,000 jobs and close RAF bases. PCS has had no discussion with management about any such plans.

Our union has been engaging the Air command management on a number of issues explaining our concerns and seeking the opportunity to influence the decision making process thus ensuring that we meet member’s wishes during these difficult times; which have not been caused by PCS members.

The Sunday Times article sets out proposed decisions which we have not been consulted on in particular the move of Jet Training to Anglesey and the new Nimrod moving to Waddington, moving helicopters to Culdrose etc. According to the story, these plans have clearly been ongoing for sometime yet despite numerous meetings regarding spending plans these matters have not been raised by the management.

Air command trade unions only last week attended the regular command Whitley meeting with Air command senior management lead by the deputy commander where we discussed our key concerns about proposals and possible job cuts. We made it quite clear that although some of these projects are not driven by Air command then we expect them to fulfil their obligation and consult with the trade unions where it impacts on Air command staff. We were assured that we would be engaged on the issues and have the opportunity to influence plans.

We have already raised our concerns with the Air command seeking information about the release of this item both in the detail and the manner. The Air command TU side chair has formally written to management expressing our alarm that discussions held last week, along with the written brief received did not warn us of such an announcement. PCS Air command delegates will also be pressing for an early meeting to clarify the points detailed in the Sunday Times article.

We will report back to members on the outcome of further discussions on this issue in due course. In the meantime we urge members to ensure that all work colleagues are members of PCS and that you attend future PCS meetings to discuss the possible threats to your job and site.
