Our union is issuing this circular in response to two recent incidents where group managers have attempted to force MGS officers to use their own vehicles when on detached duty (this is defined as duty anywhere other than your permanent duty station)
Our union wants to remind all MGS members of the following:
It is a matter of personal choice how officers get to and from their permanent duty station. It is not for management to dictate the mode of travel.
No additional insurance is required to use your private vehicle to commute to and from your permanent duty station.
When officers undertake detached duty they may choose to use their private vehicle. If they do then they must have “business use” insurance.
Officers using their private vehicles to undertake detached duty will be reimbursed their travel costs in accordance with the MoD’s rules and regulations on detached duty expenses. This is normally private rate mileage at 25p per mile. Where use of a private vehicle is essential (for example there is no public transport and no duty vehicle) you may claim standard rate mileage at 40p per mile. However to claim standard rate you must also have comprehensive insurance cover and the vehicle must belong to you or your spouse/partner, or must be hired by you or your spouse/partner.
It is again a matter of personal choice whether or not officers use their private vehicles for detached duty travel. If they decide not to use their private vehicle then they do not have to provide any justification to management for making this choice.
Officers cannot be forced to use their private vehicles for detached duty. Any attempts to force officers to use their private vehicles on detached duty must be reported to your union rep immediately.
