I am writing to invite your branch to provide nominees to Whitley committees, a list of which is set out on the Annex A below. We are strongly encouraging branches to nominate to these committees to increase the spread of PCS representatives serving on Whitley committees.
Serving on Whitley's is important work and it is a key interface with the department for our union. Serving on Whitley's gives you the chance to influence change proposals and deal with the concerns of our members directly with the decision makers.
The branch nominations will be put before the June GEC for decision. The GEC will use the following criteria for selection:
Whether the nominee works in an area or function covered by the Whitley committee concerned.
Whether the nominee adds to the experience of the PCS team in relation to knowledge or experience of the area or issues dealt with by the committee.
Each nominee is asked to provide a supporting statement on the attached form at Annex B below. The form should also normally be signed by the branch secretary or chairperson to indicate that the branch is supporting the nomination of the individual.
All appointed nominees are accountable to our members and to the GEC and are required to attend a Whitley briefing with the PCS lead representative before attending their first Whitley meeting as well as the TU sides of the Whitley's concerned. They will also be required to support the PCS lead in providing reports, as required, to the GEC.
It is important that as many union members as possible put their names forward and make sure that the views of the members that they represent are heard. It is also PCS policy to positively encourage more young members, women, members from ethnic minorities, members with disabilities and gay and lesbian members to get involved.
Group executive members will be nominated by the GEC and are therefore not eligible to be nominated additionally as branch representatives for any of these committees.
All nominations must be received at HQ by Wednesday June 2008 at the latest.
Paul Barnsley, group secretary
