Union chief in welfare debate with government minister

25 June 2008

Mark Serwotka and Stephen Timms MP, Minister of State for Employment and Welfare Reform, will be debating the government's plans for welfare reform in Cardiff tomorrow (Thursday 26 June).

The debate organised by PCS comes as concerns grow over government plans to increase the role of the private and third sectors, through the implementation of the controversial Freud report.

Other contributors to the event starting at 12:30pm, Council Chamber, Cardiff University, Cardiff, include: Steve Davies, Cardiff University Senior Research Fellow, Victoria Winckler, Director, Bevan Foundation and Mark Baker, RNID and Disability Benefits Consortium.

Commenting, Mark Serwotka, PCS general secretary, said: “This is an important opportunity to debate the future of the welfare state with Stephen Timms and other interested parties.

"We have major concerns about increasing the role of the private and third sector in the delivery of the welfare state, with questions around capacity and expertise remaining.

"Added to this is the fundamental question of whether profits for the few and the bottom line should be the driving force of the welfare state rather than service users.”
