The policies of privatisation and attacking public services pursued by this government have contributed greatly to this situation.
PCS is proud of the contribution our campaigning made to the fall in the actual number of votes cast for the BNP and credit is due to our branches and members for their efforts. We are nonetheless appalled that this has not prevented a setback to democracy.
The BNP claims to be a legitimate political party entitled to freedom of speech.
But one look at the , violent, Nazi-sympathising record of their leaders Griffin and Brons shows that they are a dangerous fascist organisation who aim to destroy the democratic rights of others.
Members of the BNP are banned from employment as police officers or in the Prison Service as their hate-filled views are incompatible with the provision of those services to the public.
PCS has called on the government to make clear that membership of the BNP is not compatible with employment anywhere in the civil and public services.
The union has called on the TUC to organise a national demonstration against racism and fascism.
The national executive committee will discuss a full report on opposition to the BNP at its July meeting.
