A 'snapshot' of government's cuts

15 July 2010

Responding to today's story in the Guardian newspaper about the impact of cuts in the Crown Prosecution Service, PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said:

"We have consistently warned that the cuts proposed by the coalition would cause enormous damage to the services our members provide.

"Today’s news about the CPS confirms this, but we fear it is just a snapshot of what is currently happening across all government departments and agencies.

"Plans are clearly being drawn up behind closed doors to remove large sections of the government's workforce and privatise more of our public services.

"Our public prosecution service is a crucial part of the justice system and cuts on this scale, coupled with plans to close more than 100 magistrates' courts, would make it virtually impossible for the staff that remain to adequately deal with workloads and prosecute cases effectively.

"There is an alternative and we are committed to campaigning nationally and in our communities to oppose these cuts that seek to make the low paid and vulnerable pay for the economic crisis.

"We will be bringing together our reps from departments currently affected by cuts proposals to discuss a co-ordinated response, and are seeking to work with other unions to see what action we can take together."
