'Disgraceful' attack on pay and pensions

19 June 2010

Responding to David Cameron's comments today that the government will target public sector pay and pensions in the budget, PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said:

"It is a disgrace that the coalition government plans to target low-paid public sector workers and those receiving welfare benefits.

"It's becoming clearer every day that this new government is determined to punish some of the most vulnerable people in our society for the mistakes of the financial speculators who are being let off the hook.

"If the government was serious about tackling the deficit and getting our economy moving again, it would take action to collect the billions of pounds in tax revenue lost every year through tax evasion and avoidance, and because Revenue and Customs doesn't have enough staff to collect it.

"PCS is committed to resisting these damaging cuts, and will seek to work with other unions where we can to organise the widest possible popular opposition in our workplaces and our communities."
