Courts closures show stark reality of spending cuts

23 June 2010

Responding to today's announcement that almost a third of courts across the UK face closure, PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said:

“The ink on George Osborne’s budget of cuts was barely dry before ministers made this announcement that threatens to devastate the administration of justice in our communities.

“This is an outrageous attack, and unmasks the so-called ‘progressive’ coalition as a ruthless government determined to take the axe to public services.

“It shows in stark reality that when public spending is cut, essential services inevitably suffer.

“As well as devastating access to local justice, we estimate that at least 1,000 jobs could be at risk.

“Our members will not sit back while vital public services are plundered to pay for an economic crisis caused by financial speculators.”
