PCS are supporting the fight to save public services on the Isle of Wight.
The closure of the Vestas wind turbine factory on the island is just one example of attacks on jobs and services on the island.
The local tax office is also under threat of closure. The 45 staff currently employed there will be expected to relocate to the mainland in order to keep their jobs. PCS has equality concerns regarding the closure as the staff there are predominantly female, some working part-time with caring responsibilities. It simply will not be possible for many of them to follow their jobs off the island.
The closure of the tax office will mean that there will no longer be a HMRC presence on the Isle of Wight. In future all queries will have to be dealt with by telephone or by internet. PCS believe that it is not fair that pensioners and low income families on the island will be expected to use these services at their own expense.
The local community has been angered by a series of public service cuts which have also included school closures and cutbacks in the fire service. These attacks on local jobs and services mean less revenue for the island and even less money spent in local economy.
