PCS calls for unity

19 December 2011

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka did radio interviews this morning accusing the government of trying to "strong-arm" public sector workers into accepting changes to their pensions.

Mark also called on union negotiators to stay united and use the collective strength shown by the two million-strong strike on 30 November to win the best deal for everybody.

The government has given union leaders until today to accept deals for the various public sector pension schemes.

Mark said: “The old union saying is ‘united we stand divided we fall’ and I would hope we remain united until the government makes concessions on the big questions.

“Let us remind ourselves that is work eight years longer, pay thousands of pounds more in, and take ten thousands of pounds less out.

“That’s what we went on strike to stop, and I think we should remain united until we stop that.”
