Fight to keep loans jobs in Glasgow

26 February 2010

Members campaigning against savage job cuts at the Student Loans Company are gaining support on an online petition.

SLC bosses announced plans in January to axe its Glasgow workforce by 25%, depriving the local economy of 200 mainly highly skilled IT and support service jobs.

The move raises the threat of compulsory redundancy for the first time in the organisation’s history.

There would also be a reduction in funding from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills for a change management programme, a 10% cut in support services, and a transfer of scanning work from Glasgow to Darlington in the north east of England.

Members have pledged to campaign to defend the jobs and have not ruled out industrial action.

The online petition, to minister for higher education David Lammy, states: "Losing up to 200 jobs during this time of recession would have an extremely detrimental effect on the city."

It calls on the minister to ensure there are no compulsory redundancies and to adhere to the national agreements we reached with the Cabinet Office in 2008.

The petition also points out that moving 45 jobs to Darlington would cost the taxpayer up to £500,000.
