Prime minister petitioned on pay

28 March 2008

Office for National Statistics rep Graham Greenlees is petitioning the prime minister to fund progression and 'cost of living' pay rises separately in the civil service.

This, his petition posted on the 10 Downing Street e-petition website states, would ‘improve transparency and fulfill the government commitment to ensuring that all civil servants are paid fairly’.

The petition notes that many public sector workers receive an annual pay rise with progression funded separately.

But in the civil service progression and the general increase are funded from the same pot. This means once progression costs are met, there isn’t enough money for a fair pay rise and increases for many are often lower than the government's 2% target for public sector pay, or their pay is frozen.

Graham’s petition also says that by funding the general pay rise separately, all civil servants would receive a 'cost of living' increase comparable with other public servants.

By funding progression separately, the true costs of progression systems would be more obvious, improving transparency.
