Tenants and trade unionists unite

30 October 2008

Defend Council Housing is bringing together tenants and trade unionists for a national conference.

With the private housing market in meltdown and banks, builders and developers shutting up shop, or closing down, there has never been a stronger case for investment in first class council housing.

On 25 November 2008, delegates from areas fighting privatisation of existing council housing will join those who want to campaign to get their local authority to start building a new generation of first class council homes for the 1.7 million households on the waiting list.

Ministers conceded in the summer that councils could apply for grants to build new council housing and they are conducting a review of council housing finance with the commitment "to ensure that we have a sustainable, long term system for financing council housing".

Plenty of warm words, but the Defend Council Housing campaign says they need turning into clear policies backed up with the resources to make them a reality.

The failure of the private housing market and new talk from ministers about borrowing to invest provides a new opportunity for supporters of council housing to step up the pressure.

Ask your branch to send delegates and make contact with council tenants’ organisations and other trade unions in your area to send a broad based delegation to the conference.

Visit the Defend Council Housing website to download a copy of the conference programme (opens in PDF).

Also on the site you can calculate how much your local authority would receive if the government fully funded allowances for housing management, maintenance and repairs, and fill in a short questionnaire to help see off the latest attacks on council housing.
