Fixed for action to defend jobs

3 March 2010

Fixed term and casual staff are being urged to join PCS and take part in industrial action over cuts to the civil service compensation scheme.

Imposed changes to the compensation scheme will make it easier to cut jobs on the cheap, making everyone more vulnerable to redundancy.

But, as a new leaflet aimed at fixed term workers points out, new staff are at the greatest risk.

PCS is doing everything possible to secure more permanent jobs for fixed term and casual staff.

By joining the union and supporting the strike on 8 and 9 March, these workers will be helping to achieve this.

Addressing temporary staff directly, the leaflet – available on the campaign pages of this website – states: "You have a legal right to join the union to strike.

"Management cannot end your contract because you join the union and strike. When your contract is due to end, management cannot refuse to renew it because you went on strike."

It also points out that the official position of the government is that it encourages "all staff to join the union", including fixed term and casual staff.

How much does it cost?

Fixed term contract staff get six months free membership, and still get all the benefits. After that, monthly subscriptions are based on earnings:

  • £10,000 a year – £5 a month
  • £12,000 – £6
  • £14.000 – £7
  • £18,000 – £9
