Vigil for murdered PCS member

27 January 2012

A vigil will be held on Sunday (29 January) to mark the twelfth anniversary of the killing of a PCS member in Brighton.

Jay Abatan was 42 and out celebrating a promotion when he suffered severe head injuries in an attack by a racist gang.

That was on 24 January 1999. He died in hospital nine days later.

Twelve years on no one has been convicted of the assault. An inquest in 2010 ruled that Jay had been unlawfully killed.

Jay's brother Michael - who was with him when he was attacked - has established a 'Justice for Jay' campaign which PCS supports.

Trade unionists are urged to attend the vigil at Brighton police station, St John's Street from 8am to 1pm on Sunday.

At the inquest coroner Veronica Hamilton-Deeley praised Jay's family for their tenacity in pursuing the case.
