Agency workers frame response

17 December 2009

Comments from reps and agency staff are included in PCS's official response to the government's consultation about temporary workers.

The union has submitted a response to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills’ draft regulations for implementing the European temporary agency workers directive.

In it we say that equal rights for agency workers are “long overdue” and we criticise the government for leaving the door open for unscrupulous employers to get round the rules.

We also say we are “bitterly disappointed” that implementation of the regulations is being delayed until October 2011.

Responses to two online surveys, for reps and agency workers, have informed our response and comments from them have been included in our submission.

One agency worker said: “...constantly in my job I worry that I will be told I am not needed any more – in fact, it happened to a friend who was working at another site.

“She was told on the Thursday that she was no longer needed and that Friday was her last day. This is very unsettling for all agency staff, and makes us feel very wary of having time off, as leave or as sick.”

Our campaign to ensure temporary staff get the rights they deserve continues and agency workers can still take part in our survey.

We also want to hear from activists about their experiences of working with agency workers. Contact research officer Imogen Radford on imogen@pcs.org.uk or 020 7801 2639.
