Flexi-time fight hots up

18 August 2008

Branch officers have launched a campaign for flexible working hours at the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA). Richard West and Shelley Wilkinson hope the initiative will bring EMDA staff into line with the rest of the civil service where flexible working is a contractual right.

The campaign follows a motion to the branch’s annual meeting earlier this year and has included a survey of members to find out how much unpaid overtime they actually do.

Branch chair Shelley said the findings were alarming. “On average people are working one extra day every month. And this is just time spent at the office.

Richard said the branch believed the campaign was winnable, although it was likely to be an uphill battle as “our employers’ response to our request for flexible working was to question the link between it and working hours!”

Since the campaign began membership at EMDA has increased by 50% and other RDA branches are now also considering joining the campaign.
