Update on political campaigning - Consultation with branches on ADC 2009 motion A72

11 February 2010

Branch briefing: February 2010

Branches should now have received copies of the consultation booklet on the question of supporting trade union candidates in elections – as per motion A72 at the 2009 Annual Delegate Conference (ADC). Further copies of the consultation are available from the PCS website.

Currently all the major political parties are queuing up to attack the public sector and your wages, pensions, and redundancy arrangements. Motion A72 asked whether we should take the fight to defend our members’ interests into the political arena by directly challenging those politicians who attack public services and our members.

As we know from our fight to defend the Civil Service Compensation Scheme, and from our experience through Make Your Vote Count, very few candidates speak in our interests. So the conference motion recognised the need to develop our approach further. Your response to this consultation will make a valuable contribution to developing our political campaigning in what will be a critical period with the ongoing economic crisis and threatened public spending cuts.

Your responses will be used to inform a motion to ADC 2010 from the NEC. Any decisions taken by conference would be then put to the whole membership in a national ballot. Please respond to the consultation by 23rd February 2010.

General Secretary
