Does Christmas start too early?

26 October 2009

Each year the shops seem to introduce Christmas collections earlier and earlier in the year, and some Christmas lights have already started to appear. Does Christmas start too early?
  • Is this making the Christmas season too long?
  • Or do you enjoy the Christmas cheer?
  • Is this just commercialisation intruding further into Christmas?
  • Or should we lighten up and make the most of the season?

  1. Christmas

Yes Christmas starts too early. You hardly get August bank holiday out of the way and the shops begin to start thinking about it. By Christmas you are sick of it. Also just after Christmas you start getting the tv adverts for Christmas clubs for the next one.

I agree that it's a wonderful time and my daughter's face lights up when she see the decorations. I'm going to enjoy this while she's young enough to be impressed by it. The fact that i've seen Christmas decorations in place before Halloween and Christmas themed TV adverts, shows to me at least the retailers are starting earlier. I mean it's not as if Christmas doesn't occur at the same time every year! Here's hoping for a white Christmas but not so much to stop our pagan brothers and sisters from enjoying their festivities!

    Bah humbug!

Christmas starts on the 24th of December, finishes on the 26th and I wish those that seek to deprive of us of our cash would remember that. I'll be raising a glass to Isaac Newton on the 25th. That's a birthday worth celebrating.

No way - Christmas is the best time of year

Christmas is a magical time of year - why not start it as early as possible? The smiles on kids' faces, the lights and decorations, they all add to the atmosphere. I can't believe the killjoys who want to put a stop to people's fun. Where's your Christmas spirit?

Dear Florian, I heartily support your alternative "christmas" or yultide. More power to your elbow. I'm not much for communing with trees myself, although I have met some very attractive ones. And smiling at birds, while innocent and harmless, is a very one-sided relationship. However, roasting a simple nut over a campfire does attract - can I suggest a few for this year? I'd like to start with Alistair Darling and Alan Johnson, both of whom qualify on at least one count. Then there's Jan Moir, Melanie Philips and Jacqui Smith; no explanation required, I assume. We could move on to Bob Ainsworth, Charles Clarke, Gordon Brown and Boris Johnson to really get the fire roaring. Finally, to go out with a bang, we could thrown on Tony Bliar and Nick Griffin - 2 equally obnoxious simpletons that the world would be better without. When are you planning on setting out?
