Young members' forum success

4 May 2010

Held annually, the national young membersÂ’ forum brings delegates from across departments together to discuss young members issues and taking our network forward.

Nearly 100 young members gathered in Birmingham over the weekend 5-6 February 2010 for the fifth young members’ forum. On the agenda was preparing for public sector cuts, defending the CSCS and taking trade union values into schools.

Delegates participated in workshops on winning the climate change argument, tackling under representation, understanding union structures, personal case handling, organising in call centres, fighting the far right and building a community campaign.

A main highlight of the forum was the election of the young member who will chair our national committee in 2010. Incumbent Alan Warner fought of stiff competition from a worthy contender, Rosie Huzzard from DWP Sheffield.

Alan was elected by 46 votes to 17. He has pledged to take our network to the next level by building a strong, united organisation that fights on the important industrial issues facing young members.

Each region has agreed plans to recruit and train up more young members, take trade unionism into schools and build links with other young people through building the ‘Youth Fight for Jobs’ campaign.

Elections have now taken place for regional and area young members convenors but if you’d like more information on how you can get involved or put in touch with a young members’ representative in your area email youngmembers@pcs.org.uk
