Legal fund for whistleblower

19 November 2008

Supporters of nurse Karen Reissmann, sacked for speaking out about NHS services, have launched an appeal to help pay her legal costs.

Branches and activists are urged to help Karen’s campaign raise more than £10,000 to fight her case for unfair dismissal against her former employer, Manchester Mental Health Trust.

Karen was sacked for criticising the effects of the semi-privatisation of Manchester’s mental health services after the trust was consistently rated as poor in delivering services to some of the most vulnerable people in the community.

As a Unison rep for more than 25 years, Karen is fighting not only for her job but for the fundamental right of unions and their elected officials to blow the whistle when necessary.

Her employment tribunal is due to be heard in Manchester on 26 January 2009.

Patrons of the appeal fund include Tony Benn, MPs John Leech and John McDonnell, both members of our parliamentary group, and the comedian Mark Steel.

Cheques should be made payable to ‘Karen Reissmann legal defence fund’ and sent to Kathy Crotty, 181 St Mary’s Road, Moston, Manchester, M40 0BN.

It's a disgrace that Unison is not supporting Karen - I know things are tough for everyone at the moment but we should all dig deep and donate a few quid to support Karen - she deserves our support.
