TUC regional education offices organise a programme of accredited courses for stewards, safety representatives, pension scheme trustees and other trade union representatives.Courses are offered flexibly to meet the needs of union reps.

The TUC education service is increasing access to its programmes through developing innovative ways of delivering training - such as open and on-line learning - so that those who find it difficult to attend courses, like part-time women workers and those from smaller workplaces, are able to benefit from it.

TUC education update

The TUC produces a newsletter, TUC Education Update, three times a year. It is aimed at anyone with an interest in union education and training . To register to receive these e-bulletins go to the TUC website.
The TUC offers a programme of core courses, one-year certificated courses and short courses all available on a regional basis.

Core programme

  • Stage 1 union reps course (60 hours)
  • Stepping Up - an advanced course for unions
  • Stage 1 health and safety reps course
  • Stage 2 health and safety reps course
  • Union learning reps course.

One-year certificated courses

The core courses lead on to a programme of three one-year certificated courses (equivalent to access to higher education) which can be can be taken either through evening classes, day release or online:

  • Certificate in contemporary trade unionism
  • Certificate in employment law
  • Certificate in occupational health and safety

Please note that PCS will pay travel & expenses for the core courses and the Occupational Certificate in Health & Safety course where participation is appropriate.

PCS does not pay travel and expenses for the Certificate in Contemporary Trade Unionism or the Certificate in Employment Law courses.

All TUC courses need to be authorised by your PCS regional learning contact.

Failure to have applications signed may mean that expenses will not be paid.
