“A Woman’s place” - pathways for women workers

This course is designed to support women workers with their development in the workplace and explore issues relating to themselves as women and union members in their working lives.

It is not designed to be a management-training course but designed to increase confidence and skills should you want to progress into a management role.

The College of North East London trade union department, PCS organising and learning services have developed it with support from the PCS equality department.

The course is accredited through the Open College Network (OCN) with 9 credits at Level 2 or 12 credits at Level 3 with the following units.

  • Handling Change at Work
  • Communication Skills
  • Project Management
  • Recognising and Tackling Discrimination

Successful completion of the course will lead to an award through the qualifications framework at either Level 2 or Level 3.

It is important to attend each session.

Course outcomes

  • Draft a project outline
  • Apply skills for the management of projects
  • Recognise how discrimination occurs
  • Identify ways of tackling discrimination 
  • Produce a Powerpoint presentation
  • Develop interviewing and presentation skills
  • Identify changes in the workplace
  • Identify problems and opportunities for trade union action
  • Understand research and statistics
  • Develop a career path and an up-to-date CV
  • Identify and research areas of women’s history

Course organisation

The course accreditation requires work at class based sessions and workplace activities.

Each tutor session will last for 6 hours with flexible time between sessions for learners to complete the set tasks and develop research skills. There will be contact with the tutor between sessions via email and/or telephone.

The course is divided into 3 Modules and each taught day would contain a session from the different modules. In between taught sessions there will be self-directed study covering an element of each module.

Module 1: Discrimination/women’s issues – this module looks at the changing lives of women, women at work, discrimination, the role of trade unions and the impact of legislation and policies in the workplace. It will enable you to make plans to progress either within the workplace or your trade union.

Module 2: Personal development – this module looks at the skills needed to progress yourself further. Writing CV’s, interviewing skills and confidence building

Module 3: Management/trade union issues and skills – this module covers project management, your role in the appraisal system, women in leadership, and presentation skills including power point.

Course materials

Materials are issued in a binder, which will contain the course activities and resources. Your notes in this folder will form part of your assessment at the end of the course.

Assessment

Your Portfolio (folder) will form the main part of the assessment. You will also produce a draft project outline and deliver two presentations.
