Personal cases - a guide for reps

The number of personal cases the union deals with across the civil service is increasing.

Devolving the civil service into departments, agencies and the private sector has resulted in an increasingly diverse set of rules and procedures.

PCS is there to support reps

Government attacks on the civil service have continued, and fewer people are expected to do more work.

The bewildering range of policies and procedures, and increased pressure of work on staff, means that PCS has become more and more involved with the problems staff face in their daily working lives.

To deal with cases effectively, PCS believes that issues should be dealt with as locally as possible.

All reps have a role to play

The large number of cases means that representatives at all levels of the union have a role to play. It is simply not possible to pass on every case to somebody more experienced than yourself.

Help is available. You will not be left on your own to sort out complicated problems.

Systems are in place within PCS to ensure that personal cases are dealt with effectively and that help can be obtained.

Where appropriate, and necessary, a case can be passed to a more experienced representative. But your local knowledge is often the key to success, so try to resolve the issue yourself.
