Union learning reps

Learning is key to union activism. Activists work hard representing and supporting members. But it is not all about reacting to problems and crises.

Union-led learning and skills initiatives 'add value' to the union card and showcase our positive work.

Learning builds confidence

The PCS learning reps network widens opportunities and skills, building members' self-confidence.

In turn, members can improve job prospects and income. It also builds branch capacity, enhances the union image and helps recruitment and retention.

Lifelong learning

The Scottish Executive's lifelong learning approach is for 'personal fulfilment and enterprise, employability and adaptability, active citizenship and social inclusion'.

That means encouraging a culture in which education and training is available and accessible for everyone.

Lifelong learning should mean learning in the broadest sense, gaining skills and confidence to progress and participate in work, in the union and in the wider community.

Experience shows appreciative PCS learners go on to become active at branch level.

Learning reps

Learning reps ensure workplace learning is both union-led and sustainable - and can make a massive difference to union organisation in a workplace.

Working alongside existing reps and officials, learning reps get involved in and support workplace and branch structures, and the wider work of the union.

Learning rep training is intensive including negotiating and bargaining skills appropriate for experienced activists.

Branches should embrace learning ensuring it is on the agenda of every branch meeting.

Negotiating a learning agreement helps embed learning in the workplace and secures employer commitment to lifelong learning.

Working together, PCS learning reps and branch officials can ensure work-based learning initiatives support the wider role of the union.
