Make your Vote Count (MYVC)

You will, of course, be aware that we are rapidly heading toward a General Election.

The MYVC campaign is an essential part of our national civil service and non-departmental public body (NDPB) dispute and aims to involve as many PCS members as possible.  It challenges those people that seek to represent you in the Westminster parliament and asks them to make a stand for public services.
This is the fourth year we’ve run the campaign; last year 1,000s of candidates were challenged and responses received were published to members which gave members the opportunity to make an informed decision about who to vote for.

What branches should do now?

Whilst no date has yet been set for the general election, candidates in the majority of constituencies either have been or are about to be selected.

  • It is important that we make contact with these candidates as early as possible raising matters of concern from PCS members.
  • It is therefore important Branch Committees appoint/elect a branch MYVC co-ordinator as soon as possible. Training will be provided for MYVC branch co-ordinators and further information will be issued shortly.

Political campaigning does work: letters from members have resulted in 146 MPs signing up to our early day motion opposing the changes to the CSCS, and that number continues to grow.

What does the campaign involve?

  • getting people involved in local campaigning activity about the elections
  • identifying local issues to use in the campaign
  • challenging candidates standing in the elections about our key issues
  • publicising candidates' responses to our questions
  • ensuring PCS issues become election issues
  • helping organise and promote candidate question time events
  • making links with community groups and other unions
  • getting new people involved
  • helping to stop the BNP
Once your branch has appointed/elected a MYVC co-ordinator, or for more information about MYVC, please e-mail cherylg@pcs.org.uk

We are encouraging as many people as possible to be actively involved in the campaign, so please get involved if you aren’t already, and encourage other members to do the same.
PCS members have a real opportunity to challenge candidates.  We want to ensure that they put our campaigning issues and the protection of civil and public services at the heart of their agenda both now and after the general election.  You can make a difference - get involved today.
