Union continues fight on cuts to redundancy payments

19 April 2010

The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) takes its fight to defend redundancy payments to the Scottish Trade Union Congress.

In a week when the campaign to defend these payments will be taken to the High Court in London, the STUC will debate a motion asking unions to stand together to oppose the tearing up of the contracts of hard working civil and public servants.

Far from being "gold-plated", these cuts strip hundreds of thousands of staff, many of whom are very low paid, of their entitlements if they are made redundant and pave the way for job cuts on the cheap.

National President Janice Godrich said "Jim Murphy told delegates on Monday that thousands of public sector jobs had been created under Labour.

He should take more notice of what is going on in his own backyard.

Over the last 5 years his Labour government has cut almost 100,000 civil service jobs, and no matter who is elected on 6 May all of the main political parties say they plan to cut many more.

PCS members did not cause the recession and shouldn't be made to pay for it. We will continue fighting to defend members’ jobs and the essential public services we provide which are needed now more than ever.”
