PCS Union Pressure forces MOD U Turn on Kentigern House

6 January 2010

The Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) has today welcomed the news of a Ministry of Defence (MOD) U turn regarding the sale of Kentigern House in Glasgow.

The sale of the flagship building in central Glasgow would have netted approximately £40m in the short term, however the estimated cost to the taxpayer over the 20-year lease would have been in the region of £150m.

MoD civil servants and Hewlett Packard staff working at the site have campaigned to save their site.

Members of Parliament and members of the Scottish Parliament have raised questions about the wisdom of the sale and highlighted the wasteful use of taxpayer’s money and an example of short-term thinking.

The issue was also raised at a candidates question time in the recent Glasgow North by election.

PCS MoD group executive member Dougie Brownlie said: “Our union has criticised the Ministry of Defence on many occasions, however, we welcome the fact that common sense has broken out and the decision to sell Kentigern House reversed”

“With the MoD budget already under extreme scrutiny, it would have been an act of utter folly to sell the building for such a knockdown price, then pay back many times this amount in the years of the lease.

I am glad that the politicians and the department have listened and acted on the concerns raised. This news will be welcomed by staff working at Kentigern House who understandably had concerns about what the proposed sale of the building would mean for their jobs”
