Support PCS members fighting 200 redundancies

17 February 2010

PCS members at the Student Loans Company in Glasgow have launched a major campaign against the company's plans to axe up to 200 jobs from its Glasgow sites.

The company announced to all staff that 150 jobs would be lost as a direct result of budget cuts imposed by the parent Department BIS. A further 45 jobs will be transferred from Glasgow to Darlington with redundancies in Glasgow. While the company are seeking voluntary redundancy, the branch fear that compulsory redundancies will be inevitable, if the cuts go ahead as planned.

Hundreds of members attended union meetings and backed the campaign to resist the cuts. They agreed to do everything possible, including considering industrial action to protect any member who is issued with a compulsory redundancy notice. They recognised that the majority of the cuts are directly linked to the attacks on public sector funding following the bail out of the banks and are adamant that public sector workers shouldn’t be the scapegoats who pay the price for the failure of bankers.

The branch are asking all members to support  their campaign by writing to their MPs, MSPs and local councillors calling on them to urge the Government and the SLC board to reconsider the proposed job cuts.
