Scottish Euro candidates on public services

22 May 2009

Scottish Euro MP hopefuls are set to get a grilling at candidates question times organised by the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) as part of its Make Your Vote Count campaign.

As the economic outlook worsens the events give candidates the opportunity to set out their views on public services including, civil and public service job cuts, office closures as well as privatisation and low pay.

The events takes place in Glasgow’s Jury’s Inn hotel on Jamaica Street on 27th May and Edinburgh’s St Mary’s Cathedral parish hall at the top of Leith Walk on 28th May. Both events start at 7pm.

PCS does not recommend any particular party or candidate. The Make Your Vote Count campaign is aimed at giving PCS members an informed choice on who to vote for on key issues affecting civil and public services. The candidate question time events are also supported by the Rail, Maritime and Transport union, the Fire Brigade Union, the University and College lecturers union and a number of anti-poverty organisations in Scotland.

Commenting Lynn Henderson, PCS Scotland political officer said: “This question time event will provide an opportunity for the public and PCS members to grill candidates on a whole host issues, including civil and public service cuts, the privatisation of vital public services and below inflation pay. This event provides PCS members and those who care about public services a chance to make an informed choice when they cast their vote.”
