PCS union in Scotland will resist attack on public sector

22 June 2010

The coalition government Chancellor will today announce in his first budget some of the most severe cuts in public spending ordinary workers have ever had to face.

PCS union will resist attacks on public sector jobs, pay and pensions in Scotland and right across the UK.

Although PCS in Scotland welcomed John Swinney's decision to delay cuts in devolved budgets until after the Scottish Parliament election this is simply delaying the pain for our members in devolved departments and agencies until 2011.

Over 60% of our members in Scotland work for UK wide departments, and will be directly affected by today's budget.

Lynn Henderson, PCS Scottish Secretary said "The public sector is a major employer in Scotland, and many thousands of public sector workers are low paid and will retire on a small pension which is anything but "gold-plated".

We do not accept that ordinary workers delivering vital public services should pay for the bankers crisis, and further cuts to jobs, pay and pensions run the risk of damaging a very fragile recovery rather than helping to reduce the deficit.

There is an alternative to cuts - the coalition government should instead take steps to collect the £120 billion of evaded and avoided tax each year. Keeping people in work and off benefits is the best way to get Scotland and the UK through this recession."
